Tetris Royale Coming to Mobile Devices Later This Year

The Tetris Company and N3TWORK are teaming up to develop a Tetris battle royale game set to come to mobile devices later this year.

Tetris is a timeless pop culture icon that has shaped the history of videogames and is truly loved around the world,” says the founder and CEO of N3TWORK, Neil Young. “Our team at N3TWORK is inspired to partner with this incredible brand and create new ways for millions of mobile game players around the world to play, compete and enjoy Tetris at an unprecedented scale.”

If this all sounds a bit familiar, that’s because Tetris 99 came along this year and became one of the Nintendo Switch’s biggest hits. However, the upcoming Tetris Royale is not a port of Tetris 99. It’s a separate take on roughly the same concept. Tetris Royale will see 100 mobile players compete to be the last one standing.

What little we know about the game so far reveals a few differences, though. For instance, reference is made to a variety of rewards that can be earned by winning which includes power-ups. It’s not clear how that element of the game will work, but we wonder how that will affect the balance of the experience. It’s also not clear whether this title will feature a targeting system similar to the one featured in Tetris 99

While the battle royale mode is certainly the star, this version of the game will also feature a marathon mode and daily challenges. It was also hinted that this will be just the first of many games to come from the recent partnership between The Tetris Company and N3TWORK.

We don’t imagine that this is going to replace Fortnite as king of the battle royale genre on mobile, but it should prove to be a fun distraction with an extra competitive element. Tetris Royale is set to roll out in beta form for iOS and Android users in select regions sometime later this year.
