Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem review: Gleeful sewer-surfing action

Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird for an underground comic parodying Marvel superheroes and Asian martial arts/monster movies, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mutated into a kid-friendly, parent-bewildering multi-media franchise. The TMNTs have been around for nearly 40 years, in movies since 1990, and have been rebooted as often as Spider-Man. So, the odds were that eventually they’d appear in a really good film.

Primarily directed and written by Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs the Machines) with assist Seth Rogen and others, Mutant Mayhem finds an interesting animated aesthetic for its neon-coloured noir. Not as dizzying as the Spider-Verse films, it’s still gorgeous, detailed and effective, looking like paintings in motion (or even claymation). In an inspired choice, the mutant heroes are sleek and expressive while all humans are lumpy, out of perspective and goofy. Without making a fuss of it, this is a film from the turtles’ point of view.

The plot is essentially a spin on the first X-Men movie, with opposed mentors – Jackie Chan as a wise old rat and Ice Cube as a mutant fly who eventually mutates again into something we’ve never seen before – and heroes who fight for a world that hates and fears them. The script harks back often to the turtles’ origins in comics geek stoner patter, but there’s a genuine heart angle as opposed to simple snark. It’s actually moving when the turtles spy on an open-air screening of Ferris Bueller’s Day Out and dream about the coolness of a human world they’re barred from.

Rowe also delivers great kaiju, kung fu, street-fight, road chase and sewer-surfing action with infectious glee. There’s been a sense in previous turtle projects that the makers didn’t quite get what the fuss was about, but this one was made with love. So, four sais up.

After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.

Directed by Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs the Machines) Kyler Spears, based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Characters Created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman, the movie stars Micah Abbey (Cousins for Life), Shamon Brown Jr (The Chi), Hannibal Buress (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Rose Byrne (Spirited), Nicolas Cantu (The Walking Dead: World Beyond), John Cena (Peacemaker), Jackie Chan (Kung Fu Panda), Ice Cube (xXx: Return of Xander Cage), Natasia Demetriou (What We Do In The Shadows), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Giancarlo Esposito (The Boys), Post Malone (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), Brady Noon (Good Boys), Seth Rogen (Invincible), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania), Maya Rudolph (The Mitchells vs the Machines).

Nickelodeon Movies and Point Grey Productions’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver are producing the all-new iteration. The film marks Nickelodeon’s first-ever CG-animated theatrical production, in partnership with Naito and Jason McConnell, who are overseeing production for Nickelodeon.

“We are beyond thrilled by this world-class cast we’ve assembled to bring these iconic, beloved characters to life in a new chapter of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe,” said President of Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Animation Ramsey Naito.

“This really sets a new bar for this globally celebrated franchise, and we can’t wait to show audiences this film.”

Cowabunga dudes! Donnie, Raph, Mikey and Leo are all back in Seth Rogan’s brand new reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Mutant Mayhem and boy does it look cool! Not only that, but the cast is pretty incredible too, with the likes of Paul Rudd, Jackie Chan and John Cena all lending their voices.
