“Superman: Legacy opens two years from today,” Gunn said on Instagram alongside artowrk from Julian Totino Tedesco (below). “It may seem far away to many of you, but it’s close to me!

“We have a lot to do between now and then. But I haven’t been more excited about a project in forever… and this cast, slowly coming together… holy cow…”

As reported by Vanity Fair, Nathan Fillion is set to play Green Lantern, Isabela Merced will play Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi will be Mister Terrific.

This comes alongside the already-announced casting of David Corenswet (The Politicial) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane.

The latest casting announcements were confirmed on Twitter by Gunn: “True,” he said while posting a link to the article. “Welcome to the cast of Superman: Legacy: Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

Fillion is no stranger to genre, having previously had roles in Buffy, and Firefly and is no stranger to Gunn, either, starring in a number of the director’s films, including the recent Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Green Lantern Guy Gardner is famous for his ginger bowl cut, so we can’t wait to see that… “Giving my old pal Nate a bowl cut might have been my primary reason for casting him 😂” Gunn said on Threads.

Isabela Merced has been acting since a young age (Dora the Explorer has been one of her many roles) and was last seen playing Juliet in Rosaline, the comedic retelling of Romeo and Juliet.

Edi Gathegi’s genre credits include playing Laurent in the Twilight films and Darwin in X-Men: First Class, and he’s recently been seen in Apple TV’s alt-history sci-fi drama For All Mankind.

Gunn has described Superman: Legacy as “the true beginning of the DCU” and will focus on a younger Superman (which is why Henry Cavill couldn’t return to the role), though it won’t go into Supes’ well-known origin story.

Early-pre production is well underway on the movie with, according to Gunn, “costumes, production design, and more now up and running.”

One of the many exciting announcements recently made by DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran in their initial ‘Gods And Monsters’ phase was the fact that we’re getting a new Superman movie, Superman: Legacy, and that James Gunn will be writing the script. Now, Gunn has taken to social media to announce that he’ll also be directing.

Gunn has described Superman: Legacy as “the true beginning of the DCU” and will focus on a younger Superman (which is why Henry Cavill couldn’t return to the role), though it won’t go into Supes’ well-known origin story.

Gunn was halfway through writing the script when he announced the movie and it seems something within it has pulled him into wanting to direct the movie too.

“Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025,” he said on social media. “My brother Matt said, when he saw the release date, he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized.

“It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago – I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved.

“Then a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.

“So I chose to finally take on writing the script. But I was hesitant to direct, despite the constant pestering by Peter Safran and others to commit (sorry, Peter).

“Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it in my bones, visually and emotionally, enough to spend over two years directing it, especially not something of this magnitude.

“But, the long and the short of it is, I love this script, and I’m incredibly excited as we begin this journey.”

We have to wait until 2025 for Superman Legacy, but until then we have James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, which is out this May.
