In honour of the occasion, we’ve compiled a list of sci-fi, fantasy and horror films that you could and should watch today, and tomorrow, and maybe the day after that…

Mad Max: Fury Road

George Miller’s fourth Mad Max film shocked everyone in 2015 when it turned out that it was not just amazing, but extremely feminist. Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) drives the film (and the War Rig) as a one-woman storm on a mission to get justice and vengeance for the group of women who had been wronged and raped by the tyrannical dictator Immortan Joe.

Tank Girl

Lori Petty is deliciously weird as Tank Girl in the film based on the comic book series of the same name. Set in a post-apocalyptic, drought-ravished version of Australia, it’s basically Mad Max on crack, with brighter clothes and humanoid kangaroo super soldiers. Tank Girl is the hero we didn’t know we needed but are glad we got.

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night

Director Ana Lily Amirpour’s slow-burner feminist vampire romantic thriller is as unusual and wonderful as it sounds. Set in modern day Iran, the film follows the activities of a vampire (Sheila Vand) that wanders around desolate ghost-town Bad City, stalking unsuspecting men and following them home. The whole film is a kooky, wonderful character study with to-die-for visuals.

The Craft

Cult classic The Craft is always worth revisiting; revolving around the lives of a group of teenaged girls obsessed with witchcraft, it’s basically every high school girl flick you’ve ever seen, but so much better. It’s sometimes scary, often hilarious and always iconic, and Fairuza Balk is particularly marvellous as Nancy, the coven’s unofficial leader.

Ghostbusters

Last summer’s Ghostbusters reboot earnt the franchise a whole new generation of fans, as well as winning over a lot of the old ones, with its hilarious, female-driven group of proton pack-wearing heroes. With its laugh-a-minute script and exciting visual effects, it certainly knew how to make bustin’ feel good. It also brought us Dr Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), for which we will forever be grateful.

Aliens

Somewhere between Alien and Aliens, Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) went from a classic Final Girl to a badass, ass-kicking action hero, transforming her into a timeless icon of sci-fi cinema for ever more. We’re confident that there’s not a single person on the planet, whatever gender they may be, that doesn’t wish they were Ripley at least a little bit.

Matilda

International Women’s Day isn’t just for grownups. Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) has been a strong, independent role model since she was a wee bairn, striving for nothing but knowledge and a valid library card. Her telekinesis and perfectly tied hair ribbon were just added bonuses.

Buy/rent from Amazon Video or stream on NowTV.

Ginger Snaps

If you fancy blood, werewolves and sister drama, Ginger Snaps is the film you’re looking for. Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle star as Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald, sisters from suburbia who share a morbid fascination with death. The drama kicks off when Ginger is attacked by a mysterious creature while on her period, and she starts to undergo a change that puts a strain on hers and Brigette’s relationship forever.

Jennifer’s Body

Many people often disregard Jennifer’s Body as being not that great, but it understands teenage girls in a way that not a lot of films do. Karyn Kusama’s black comedy horror focuses on the complex friendship between Jennifer (Megan Fox) and Needy (Amanda Seyfriend) just as much as it does on Jennifer’s possession and subsequent killing spree.

The Falling

Some films aren’t worth trying to explain, and Carol Morley’s compelling supernatural mystery The Falling is one of them, but we’re going to try anyway: Maisie Williams stars as Lydia, an English school girl who has a rough time when her best friend Abbie (Florence Pugh) dies after a series of mysterious fainting spells. Stuff happens, followed by some more stuff, followed by some weird stuff, and our minds are blown.

As the title suggests, Scalextric have bundled together the iconic Back to the Future Delorean with everyone’s favourite talking car, Knight Rider’s K.I.T.T. Included in the set is the two cars, controllers, power supply and a track.

The 5.3 metre stylised figure 8 style track features a sideswipe section, forcing the cars to battle side by side for the tightest gap, and a crash-inducing crossover, making sure if you ain’t fast, you’re last.

Both cars are faithful replicas, even featuring a micro-sized Marty and Michael behind the wheel. Headlights glare and K.I.T.T.’s red LED smile bounces back and forth egging you on to whizz around.

The Knight Industries Two Thousand (K.I.T.T.’s real name) is a modified 1982 Pontiac Trans Am (a high-performance version of the third generation Firebird). It was originally designed by customizer Michael Scheffe (who also had a hand in the BTTF car) and was later modified by none other than George Barris, creator of the iconic 1966 Batmobile (Scalextric have made a 1/32 scale of this too).

The Delorean is modelled on the original movie car, so while there’s no Mr Fusion as on the recent release of the DMC DeLorean from Back To The Future Part II, there is a “working” flux capacitor. So for now you’ll have to rely on regular electricity in the hope of reaching 88MPH.

Fortunately both cars utilise Scalextric’s patented Magnatraction system meaning more traction and reduced chance of skidding and crashing. Though with the fun track layout, crashes remain a definite probability. The SciFiNow intern was especially grateful not to be spending their lunchbreak picking up cars unexpectedly flying off the bends.

Scalextric aficionados may recognise the retro branding used on the packaging which really helps cement that Eighties nostalgia while the simple controllers and connector system continue to bring the fun of slot car racing into the 21^st century.

Inspired by the Helsing graphic novel series, Van Helsing sees vampires now dominate the world, following an event referred to as ‘The Rising’.

Vanessa Van Helsing, the great-great-great grand daughter of vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing, is resurrected to lead the surviving humans in their struggle against the vampires.

Created by Neil LaBute (The I-Land), the series stars Kelly Overton (True Blood), Jonathan Scarfe (The 100), Aleks Paunovic (Hawkeye), Rukiya Bernard (Yellowjackets), Vincent Gale (Midnight Mass) and Christopher Heyerdahl (Peacemaker).

Van Helsing The Complete Collection features all 65 episodes from every season, including the eagerly awaited fifth and final season.

Dazzler Media presents Van Helsing: The Final Season on Blu-ray, DVD & Download-to-Own from 10 January and Van Helsing: The Complete Collection is also available on Blu-ray & DVD from 10th January.

The Scalextric 1:32 replica of the DMC DeLorean from Back To The Future Part II has been finished with the finest detail. The interior has been fitted out with the time circuits and of course, a flux capacitor, though these were ‘disabled for our safety’ during testing.

Piloted by a miniature Marty McFly, replete in his trademark red gilet, it’s easy to identify this as the car from the second movie thanks to the presence of Mr Fusion Home Energy Reactor. There’s no need to top it up with banana peels or any other household rubbish though to achieve the necessary 1.21 gigawatts of power, as the slot car is fully compatible with all the usual 12V Scalextric tracks.

Another fun feature is the inclusion of the futuristic bar-code license plates that the Doc refitted when the car showed up at the end of the first movie. Although we couldn’t actually scan the tags, we’re pretty sure if we had a 2015 bar code scanner they’d translate as OUTATIME!

Here at SciFiTowers, we’re massive fans of the BTTF franchise and we love the futuristic nostalgia that playing with the DeLorean never fails to deliver (even if some of the team were still a little disappointed that Scalextric hadn’t been able to make the actual full-sized car). So grab your Huey Lewis CDs and travel back to the future of 2015 (or is that the past? Time travel is confusing)!

The Scalextric Batmobile (which is in perfect 1:32 scaling) comes complete with those distinctive vintage fins and red trim, as well as a fixed-on Batman figure in 1960s garb (though you’ll have to supply your own mask and cape when playing with this collectable classic). It also comes with two spare Braid plates to help when running it on the Scalextric track.

The original car used for the sixties TV show starring Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and Robin, was a reworking of the 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car by legendary car-customiser George Barris and his team, and this new Scalextric model captures every inch of that Sixties cool, replicating those sleek manta-ray like lines all the way down to the oh-so-cool Batwing-inspired tail fins.

Although the car is famous for its flame-throwing turbine thruster at the rear (something every movie Batmobile since has embraced), the car itself was powered by a 6.4-litre V8. Fortunately, this new version will run on all the usual 12V Scalextric systems no atomic batteries required.

As well as being the coolest looking car around town, the TV show’s Batmobile always had one eye on practicality. To ensure the caped crusaders would always be prepared for a long day’s crime-fighting, it featured such wonderful gadgets like a Bat Ray Projector, a Batscope and of course the Emergency Bat Turn Lever, which allowed the Batmobile to do a quick 180-degree turn thanks to two rear-mounted ten-foot parachutes.

The interior of this new Scalextric model perfectly captures that super cool gadget-laden interior and even features its own Batphone so you’ll always have a direct line to Commissioner Gordon (just remember to pull over when you make a call – there’s no hands-free in 1966).

So team up with your own boy-wonder and prepare to dance the Batusi once more as you race through the streets of Gotham (or your living room) with the Scalextric 1966 Batmobile. Available now…

Kent-based, Buckingham Covers who produce limited edition stamp collectables are quoted as saying: “This is fantastic news, we can finally show off our work to another species of collector.”

This strange remark does seem suspicious and given an eyewitness account claims that ‘strange machines, monstrous tripods with ropes of steel and long flexible glittering tentacles’ were seen very close to the Buckingham Covers office it’s possible that staff may have already been probed. Another witness described ‘sluggard creatures’ at the scene but we have yet to confirm if this was an alien life-form or just the staff leaving. More on this as we get it.

What we can report is that a stunning, limited edition collector’s pack has just been released. It appears to celebrate the genius of Britain’s sci-fi writer HG Wells who dwells locally in Sandgate, Kent. The writer is rumoured to have a ‘Time Machine’ as he prophesized a ‘War of the Worlds’ very similar to recent events.

The previously mentioned collector’s pack is perfect for any science fiction fan and includes a special first-day cover which features the full-set of Royal Mail Classic Science Fiction stamps among other ‘interesting’ items. More evidence of an infiltrated postal service, as you can see.

These interesting items include a poster, newspaper reproduction and a stamps collectable which can be perfectly mounted onto the poster. All elements come bound in a ‘Top Secret’ folder to avoid this classified information reaching the wrong hands in these troubling times.

This Collector’s Edition is limited to just 200 and is sure to be popular. For further information it is advised you visit www.buckinghamcovers.com/scifinow
