“All I remember doing was reading [the script] over and over for like two days and I just remember… I think I cried!” actor Elysia Rotaru says, remembering when she first got the role of Black Canary in the latest DC animation movie, Justice Society: World War II. “I still have moments of tears of joy where I’m like: ‘This is so unreal’”

Indeed, the studio has been knocking it out of the park recently with its animated movies, ranging from light-hearted takes on Seventies kung-fu films with this year’s Batman: Soul of the Dragon to the devastating Justice League Dark: Apokolips War which saw some of DC’s icons find themselves on the wrong side of good and evil.

That momentum seems to be continuing with Justice Society: World War II which sees our favourite speedster the Flash (aka Barry Allen) accidentally jump to the rather unfortunate (and dangerous) moment in time of the mid-Forties and smack bang in the middle of the second world war. Even though we’ve seen Barry Allen time-jump in plenty of comic books, TV series and films, in JS: WWII this is definitely a new experience for him. In fact, this is a whole new take on time-jumping and on the character itself.

“As an actor, you’re always working on the script you have,” actor Matt Bomer tells us, who plays the Flash. “So even though you have these really deeply ingrained ideas of who these characters are from years of loving these iconic heroes, you have to really focus on the story with this character in this particular film.”

Barry Allen finds himself in the middle of World War II…

Indeed, this is a different, rather naive and young Barry Allen we see in Justice Society: World War II, who is quite new in his heroic career and is desperately trying to maintain a healthy balance between hero work and his relationship with his girlfriend Iris West. “His mind is in a million different places,” Bomer continues. “He’s completely scattered. He’s trying to do ten different things at once and he can’t really be present in his relationship with Iris and in his life. It’s only through his encounter with the Justice Society that he really starts to understand how we have to appreciate what we have at the moment and really be present in our lives, and the rewards we get from relationships when we take the time to really just be present with one person.”

Ah yes, the Justice Society. Being accidentally thrown into a world war might be tough enough on even the most laid-back of people. However, Barry is also thrown right into the path of DC’s Golden Age of Heroes who have formed to become the Justice Society of America, including the aforementioned Black Canary, Wonder Woman (Stana Katic), Hawkman (Omid Abtahi), Hourman (Matthew Mercer) and… the Flash?! This time in the form of Jay Garrick (voiced by Armen Taylor).

“It’s really shocking and jarring, particularly when he finds his new relationship to his powers in this different world,” Bomer says of Barry meeting Jay. “I think he’s really having to process and cope with a lot, on the move, as things are happening and transpiring. But what I loved about it is the fact that they’re able to coalesce and find ways to work together and use both their powers together in order to achieve things that they normally won’t be able to do on their own.”

The two Flashes join up to achieve the seemingly impossible.

Even though Barry and Jay eventually learn to get on, the Justice Society doesn’t immediately warm to the intruding speedster. As if they didn’t have enough on their plate fighting a war and trying to defeat the Nazis, now they have another enhanced human to deal with who seems to think he’s from the future! Luckily Barry has that sharp wit and effortless charm to make his way through: “One of the things that bolster him is his sense of humour and adaptability and fortitude because it really is an unimaginable circumstance that he finds himself in,” Bomer explains. “I feel that honestly if the Justice Society weren’t in the middle of a war they would have taken more time to be like: ‘Who are you?’ But it’s really because of the stakes, of the circumstances the Justice Society is in, that he has to adapt and help out however he can as soon as possible because there isn’t time to really sit and relax and reflect on it all!”

In fact, it was that sense of humour that really appealed to Bomer, who’s played a multitude of DC characters both in animation (as Superman in Superman: Unbound) and on screen (as Larry Trainor in Doom Patrol): “His sense of humour was one of the most appealing things about the character and why I wanted to play the role. [It’s] his means of using it as both a way to ingratiate himself but also to make difficult circumstances a little bit more manageable!”

Speaking of manageable, taking on such iconic characters could be daunting for plenty of actors. Luckily the cast have almost 90 years of DC heritage to pull from when creating their own versions, including plenty of iterations of its most famous characters: “100% I looked at the past iterations,” Rotaru says, who’s also no stranger to DC, playing Taiana Venediktov in CW’s Arrow. “I also referenced the other amazing voice actors who have voiced the Black Canary in the past and the live-action stuff. I did have the luxury to work on Arrow for a season and I really loved the work Katie Cassidy was doing and then Juliana [Harkavy] stepped into the role so I watched a little bit of that too, just to see what they were doing on The CW.”

Elysia Rotaru looked at other iterations of the Black Canary when taking on the role in Justice Society: World War II.

“Of course at the end of the day, it’s always lovely to get infused and informed by other performances and then just get guided in the booth by your director,” Rotaru continues. “That’s what I love the most about what I do. It’s just that collaborative effort of someone taking what you can bring, or bringing something out in you, and taking it from there and then playing around developing her.”

As with any good DC movie, there’s plenty of action and while the cast may not have had to squeeze themselves into lycra and go through rigorous stunt rehearsals, that doesn’t mean being in a booth recording those scenes was easy work: “Whoever says that voiceover animation work is easy, does not know the experience of working through a fight sequence, because I’ve only ever left sweaty and exhausted!” laughs Bomer. “I’m such a mess, honestly I can’t, I’m not very good at faking. It started with Superman, and it’s only continued to the Flash. I’m knocking things over, I’m sweating, red-faced, gasping for breath, I’m throwing punches, kicks, getting hit in the face, in the stomach. All the grunts and groans they typically save for the end of the recording session so you don’t lose your voice, especially if you get a little carried away as I do, but it’s honestly one of the most fun things to do. At first, I was very self-conscious the first time we did it on Superman and now I just throw caution to the wind and forget that anyone is watching me make a fool out of myself I just go crazy in there.”

Similarly, it wouldn’t be a DC movie without a good dose of trauma and it’s the Black Canary who shoulders a lot of the heavy emotional burdens in JS: WWII, an element that also took a lot of work while recording: “I had to dig deep,” Rotaru nods. “It’s something that I really believe life experiences help you with, for sure. One of my mentors growing up and studying in the theatre was like ‘go and get a life’. That’s how you bring life to your work, by going and having a life and you know, fortunately, and unfortunately, I’ve had events in my life that I could use as parallel situations that Black Canary might have had. Not to the extreme that [we see in the movie, but] I think you kind of have to tap into your resources and let yourself dive into your emotional cesspool sometimes and see what’s there. And if you don’t have it in your toolbox look elsewhere, look outside yourself and look at the world. This character is quite young, so it was kind of nice because it wasn’t too far-fetched from maybe where I’m living myself at the moment.”

The Black Canary goes through a complex emotional arc in the movie.

Speaking of the Black Canary, in JS: WWII she’s certainly on the back foot when Barry arrives, immediately not trusting him and wanting to get on with the task at hand without him. However, there are certainly glimpses at a softer side to the character, especially when it comes to her fellow Society members: “Black Canary definitely holds a strong chord with one of her fellow JSA members that you will witness when you watch the film and that resonated with me, through and through. Being part of an ensemble like that is something that, I almost hate to say it, is like I relate to her a lot because I’ve always had a lot of friends and been in groups of friends but I’ve always felt like I was a little bit on the outskirts with them just because I’m a floater like that. I don’t have my huge clique of five girlfriends all the time. I float around to a lot of groups of people and I feel like that is kind of Canary’s vibe a little bit too. She’s grounded in the group but then there’s also a little bit of a wall or guard up. So it’s nice to see her evolution and her process with that within the group.”

It’s certainly a complex (and cool) role that Rotaru was keen to become: “I think she’s got that edge,” she enthuses, “she’s a little bit ahead of the time. I mean even her outfit is just on point – I would love to get a cosplayer that looked like that and was like ‘hey check out my culottes’!

“I was so grateful to have brought a voice to that iteration because she just looks so different. It’s fun to see her like that and then with the parallel of Wonder Woman and then all the other JSA characters… like okay, there she is: blonde bombshell! It’s kind of cool, it’s hard for me to put it in words because I’m constantly smiling and my eyes are always big when I see her!”

The Black Canary is grounded within the group but she still has her guard up.

With such an impressive pedigree behind it, it’s clear that those involved in the making of JS: WWII are confident that the latest movie in the DC animated universe holds its own: “The animation style is phenomenal,” Bomer says. “I got a brief glimpse at it and it looked great when we first started recording. [It] has this great noir feel to the present world versus the world Barry finds himself in. There’s this great patina on the world when he meets the Justice Society. That was really effective. I think the voice-over work by all the actors – and this is really starting with Stana [Katic] and throughout the whole cast – is really strong.

“I found this particular piece really moving when I watched it. It’s got all the great action sequences that we’ve come to know and love from these DC animated films, which are always so fun to see and they don’t disappoint in this. But also there are moments in the film that I was really moved [by], and I think it will take some folks by surprise, hopefully in a good way.”

Justice Society: World War II is out now on digital, DVD and Blu-ray.

The Flash has a tendency to accidentally transport himself into varying time periods but when Barry Allen unintentionally finds himself smack bang in the middle of the second world war in Justice Society: World War II and among DC’s Golden Age of heroes (including Wonder Woman, the Black Canary, Hourman and even another version of The Flash!), not even his quick wit and scientific knowledge can get him out of his unfortunate predicament.

However, with a war raging on and a group of superheroes in need of some help to turn the tide back in the favour of the Allies, Barry has to overcome his own doubts (including whether to commit to his girlfriend Iris or fully immerse himself into superhero work) to help the Justice Society in their war against the Nazis.

Justice Society: World War II is the latest from the DC Universe animated original movies and with such a high pedigree of diverse and ground-breaking films behind it (including Superman: Man Of Tomorrow and Justice League Dark) the team are pulling out all the stops for its latest foray into the world of DC with an impressive cast of actors and filmmakers.

We spoke to one of those filmmakers, writer Jeremy Adams, who’s no stranger to DC’s iconic characters, penning (among many many others) this year’s Batman: Soul of the Dragon, as well as Teen Titans Go! Vs. Teen Titans and episodes of Green Lantern: The Animated Series.

How did it all begin for you with Justice Society: World War II?

Well, Jim Krieg and Butch [Lukic] are kind of the masterminds of DC animation right now. Jim and I have co-written a bunch of stuff together, so he called me up was like: ‘Hey, would you want to do something in this world?’ So Meghan [Fitzmartini] and I got together and came up with some ideas and batted it around with Jim and then it was just kind of organic.

The great thing is that animation is a super collaborative art form. I remember doing Green Lantern: The Animated Series – I wrote this episode and I got these notes back like ‘hey, you need to add a space worm’. I was like ‘that’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard’ and Jim gave me a piece of advice: “Listen, if a guy wants Hal Jordan to have a talking moustache, you write the best talking moustache!”

Then the episode came out and darn it if that space worm did not add a huge amount to the episode! It hit me like a shockwave. I work with professional artists and professionals that do this day in and day out, and what I learned is just to rely on those people and try not to have an ego about it. So Meghan and I, with Jim and Butch, just really tried to give these guys what they want to do, because if we can do that, then they’re going to do the best version of it. If they’re angry about it and they don’t want to do it, then it’s not going to look great. It’s how do we get those people that we collaborate with excited about the project? [Because] then it’s just going to be an even better project!

Did you look to any particular comic books for inspiration when writing the film?

I went back to some of the original JSA stuff and the Flash Of Two Worlds. But the reality is I’ve been an uber nerd since I was a little kid, so it all kind of seeps into your brain. I’m writing The Flash comic book now for DC and it is one of those funny things where I know more than I’ve forgotten. You have these relationships with these characters, and you’ve had these relationships with these characters for a long time, that when somebody puts the action figures in your hand you don’t have to ask questions about it, you know exactly how you’re going to play.

It’s the same thing with Meghan. Meghan is superhero nerd, and Jim… we don’t have to be like ‘oh yeah what’s that person’s powers?’ – no, not only do we know these powers. we know when they’ve lost these powers, and we know how they use the powers. So it makes it a little easier to write for.

The Flash accidentally time jumps back to World War II. Why send the Flash back to this particular time period?

It was always on the cards, mainly because it’s such a dynamic era of the personification of good versus evil. Also artistically there are some great visuals that you can pull from in that era.

It’s also a time in our world where there was a little bit of mystery and magic. At that time, [there was still] the old European maps of the ocean with ‘there be dragons here’. The world is fully explored at this point [but] there was still enough superstition and we know that Hitler was going after occult items. You can lay a story in there that feels like maybe this could be true.

I had a grandfather who fought in some very heavy fighting in World War II and they call it the greatest generation for a reason. What better way to illustrate the overall point we’re making about humanity being heroic? Humanity, even though it might cause death, stands for the things that bring life.

The second world war was visually and thematically the perfect time period for Justice Society: World War II.

Was it fun to dig back into the Golden Age of comic book characters for Justice Society: World War II?

Yeah, it really was. Because budgets are limited and we don’t have that much time, we didn’t get to use everybody, [but that] has been nice as we take some characters, put them in there and explore them a little bit.

One of my favourites has always been Hourman. I feel like I could do a whole movie just about Hourman but it can only be an hour long… No just kidding. I would love to do that!

I think Hawkman is such an interesting character with that reincarnation angle but for me the thing that popped was Black Canary. That character really for whatever reason just popped off the screen for me.

The character of Black Canary really pops from the screen.

Why did you choose these particular characters for the story?

We wanted to have more rough and tumble characters that are going to get into the muck and mire of war and these characters just seem to be the most accessible to that. Plus, Jay Garrick as The Flash and getting to play him off of Barry and explore what that means to Flash a little bit is really good!

Also, the older version of Wonder Woman I think really plays too. You see it in the trailer where somebody’s shooting a cannon at her, and she’s still walking and she just slightly moves her head. I was like ‘oh my gosh, there’s just so much panache and character in that moment, she is such a BA!” and you get everything about her in that. I love that.

Wonder Woman is such a BA in Justice Society: World War II.

It’s probably fair to say that the ending is pretty open-ended. Will there be a sequel to Justice Society: World War II?

We will see won’t we [haha]! That’s all I can say because like the Suicide Squad, [there’s] a button in which my neck explodes if I say anything more! So you know, I hope that we do get more opportunities to tell more stories…

Superman: Man Of Tomorrow

Another DC animated movie full of inspirational charm and classic action.

Barry Allen, aka The Flash just can’t stop (which is pretty standard for the Flash) in Justice Society: World War II. Even when he goes for a picnic in Metropolis with his beloved girlfriend Iris West, he can’t help interrupt their romantic rendezvous to put on the red super-suit and save the day for those in trouble.

This time, however, it just so happens that to save the world The Flash has to do what he does best and run really really fast. Unfortunately, he runs a little too fast and appears to have run back in time, arriving slap bang in the middle of the Second World War in front of a hail of Nazi bullets.

Understandably a little freaked out, Barry gets out of the line of fire, only to discover a band of unfamiliar costumed adventurers, led by Wonder Woman, coming to the aid of the Allied forces. Unable to sit still yet again, he joins a new fight to once again tries to save the day and hopefully make his way back home.

When settling into the latest DC animated movie, it helps to bear in mind that this is not a Justice League movie, this is the Justice Society Of America, the predecessors to the Justice League. A group of superheroes who have long been forgotten/erased by history. Led by everyone’s favourite Amazonian princess, Wonder Woman (Stana Katic), Justice Society: World War II works to bring a whole new (albeit old) roster of heroes to the fore. While some viewers may recognise the (re)appearance of Hawkman, Black Canary and Jay Garrick’s tin-hatted Flash, writers Jeremy Adams and Meghan Fitzmartin have clearly had a ball raiding DC’s back catalogue to introduce Golden Age heroes like Hourman to the adventure.

This departure from centring a movie around DC’s usual Big Three really helps to introduce a new dynamic to the DC animated universe. Although a time-travelling Flash is definitely something we’ve seen before, JS:WWII does it with a younger, more naïve Barry Allen (Matt Bomer), who’s still very early on in his career as a hero. Playing Barry as the fish-out-of-water gives the story a chance to really showcase some previously underdeveloped (in animation) characters. Elysia Rotaru’s Black Canary and Omid Abtahi’s Hawkman are particular stand outs, with personal emotional beats that still manage to hit heavy within an ensemble adventure. Not forgetting those who are lycra-less, Wonder Woman’s right hand man of action Steve Trevor (Chris Diamantopoulos) also shines as the noble, devil-may-care lovestruck cavalier.

Fans of alt-history will certainly enjoy the sight of Wonder Woman kicking Nazi butt, but the story really shifts into high gear when the Atlanteans join the fray. Led by an Aquaman with a bit of a (fish and) chip on his shoulder, we again witness some story arcs familiar to DC aficionados. However, by setting the board with an unfamiliar cast of characters we get to watch events play out with a new set of stakes and unpredictability.

Despite being billed as a standalone movie, Justice Society: World War II arrives as a perfect follow up to 2020’s Superman: Man Of Tomorrow. It wonderfully embodies the inspirational charm from a Golden Age era where heroes had noble values, and audiences can lose themselves in simply watching the good guys beating mammoth odds (and Nazis) to save the day.

That’s not to say there’s a lack of depth. Indeed, by resetting the clock to tell stories earlier on in the characters’ careers, the tone isn’t weighed down by the burden of long, complex backstories. DC has a deep bench of characters and it’s a real delight to see these Golden Age characters brought to the screen in a more classic representation, eschewing the trend of the Eighties’ penchant for darker, more realistic reimaginings.

In fact, Justice Society: World War II embodies what seems to be a new trend for this latest era in DC animation of keeping the plot relatively straightforward, meaning we get to spend more time discovering just how much fun our grandad’s heroes really were.
