Paramount+ has officially greenlit Star Trek: Section 31, an original movie event which sees the return of Michelle Yeoh (who’s just won an Academy Award for Best Actress in Everything Everywhere All At Once) as Emperor Phillipa Georgiou, a character she first played in Star Trek: Discovery’s first season.

“I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long,” said Michelle Yeoh. “Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Phillipa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched, and to see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible the power of never giving up on your dreams.

“We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you, and until then: Live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!”

In Star Trek: Section 31 Emperor Phillipa Georgiou joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.

“All the way back in 2017, before the first season of Star Trek: Discovery had even aired, Michelle had the idea to do a spin-off of her character, Phillipa Georgiou,” said Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman. “She broke new ground as one of the first two women on screen in the pilot to usher in a new age of Trek, and now, six years later, Star Trek: Section 31 finally arrives on the heels of her latest groundbreaking win.

“Everyone on Team Trek couldn’t be more thrilled to have our legendary friend return home to us as we expand our storytelling into new and uncharted corners of the Trekverse. Long Live Emperor Georgiou, Long Live Michelle Yeoh!”

Star Trek: Section 31 is written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. It is executive produced by Alex Kurtzman, Craig Sweeny, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Michelle Yeoh.

“We’re thrilled that Star Trek: Section 31 will be the next title in our ‘Star Trek’ universe,” added Domenic DiMeglio, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Data at Paramount Streaming. “Michelle Yeoh is an incomparable talent – she brought Emperor Georgiou to life in such an incredibly fun and nuanced way that the character immediately became a fan favorite.

“We’re so thrilled to welcome Michelle back to the Star Trek and Paramount+ family and can’t wait for fans to see what this special movie event has in store.”

Star Trek: Section 31 is produced by CBS Studios, and production will begin later this year.

A bold question to ponder so early on in the year but our question may be answered with a resounding ‘yes’ if this year’s Gotham Awards are anything to go by, with the film’s star Ke Huy Quan winning ‘Outstanding Supporting Performance’ and the film itself winning ‘Best Feature’.

Directed by filmmaking duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (aka the Daniels), Everything Everywhere All At Once follows unlikely hero Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) a Chinese-American woman who co-owns a struggling laundromat with her meek husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan). And she’s not having a great time. Waymond is wanting a divorce, her demanding father’s (James Hong) health is failing, her daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu) is frustrated by Evelyn’s own snippy disapproval, and a ruthless IRS worker named Deirdre Beaubeirdra (Jamie Lee Curtis) is auditing her for, among countless other dubious decisions, claiming a karaoke machine as a tax expense.

When an interdimensional rupture threatens to unravel reality, the fate of the world is suddenly in Evelyn’s hands and as bewildering dangers emerge from the multiverse, she must channel her newfound powers to save her home and her family.

“We’re feeling a little shock right now,” Dan Kwan said when asked what the award means to him. “When we premiered this new film in March, we thought we’d be lucky if people even went to the theatres go see it. This was right at the point in the pandemic as the theatres were opening up. So the fact that people are still discovering the film, still talking about the film, already feels like such a win.”

First set up over 30 years ago, the Gotham awards are presented annually to the makers of independent films.

“We have so much respect for the Gotham awards and any institution that tries to uplift independent films, independent voices,” Kwan continues. “Those are the films that changed our lives and those are the films that we really hold with high regard. So to be amongst them is incredible.”

It was clear in Ke Huy Quan’s emotional acceptance speech that the award means very much to him. After starring in a flurry of blockbuster films as a child (in roles in The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) Quan gave up acting for 20 years after roles dried up. “It was tough,” he told People back in April this year. “I was waiting for the phone to ring, and it rarely did.”

After the success of films like Crazy Rich Asians, Quan decided to step back in front of the camera and we’re rather glad he did!

“It’s so incredible,” Quan said when asked about his award. “I can’t thank our family enough. I’m staring at Dan and Daniel and Jamie and I’m just so so so grateful to be here.”

Ke Huy Quan plays various versions of the same character in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

“With Ke being given that award last night – as far as I’m concerned, it is as strong an example of perseverance, of belief in oneself and of understanding the realities of the industry,” Quan’s co-star Jamie Lee Curtis added. “At one point Ke stepped away from the industry because the industry rejected him. As an actor it didn’t offer him any work and so he created other work for himself.

“Then his making his way back into being a performer, seeing a movie like Crazy Rich Asians and then to be able to have this opportunity, this beautiful, multi layered, incredible role, written. Then he won that role through an audition process with the Daniels… Last night’s win is an example for every single person who’s ever dreamed and lost the dream and found it again, that anything is possible. That’s to me the beauty of Ke and his expansive heart and great talent.”

Jamie Lee Curtis plays IRS worker, Deirdre Beaubeirdra.

Addressing his emotional speech, Quan says that it’s pretty much been the theme since he started doing press for the movie… “Ever since our movie came out, I have not done one single interview where I don’t get choked up,” he says. “And my wife put up with it all these months and then finally, I think in the last month or so, she says Ke, I think you’ve cried way too much.

“Then when Emilia Jones, was announcing all the nominees [at the awards], I thought there was no way that I was going to win because sitting right at the next table was Gabrielle Union, which I loved in The Inspection, and all these wonderful actors. Then when she called out my name, I looked over to my wife, and she was crying! She was crying uncontrollably. And I started to cry. And then I went over to hug The Daniels and I hugged our producer Jonathan and our daughter Stephanie and they were crying.

“So even before I made it up to the podium, I was a mess!”

Everything Everywhere All At Once is out now on digital, 4k, Blu-ray and DVD.

If you wanted to, you could spend an eternity listing every single cultural influence that inspired the Daniels to create their exhilarating multiverse movie, Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Films like The Matrix and In the Mood for Love are obvious touchstones… but all you really need to know going in is that these directors love cinema and appreciate that every single film (and person) is made up of beautiful specific details that hold great meaning to each unique individual in an infinite number of ways.

In Everything Everywhere All At Once alternate universes, lives, regrets and possibilities flash into Evelyn Wang’s (Michelle Yeoh) mind at the most inconvenient time – like while she’s attempting to file her taxes for the laundry business she runs with her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan). Evelyn’s also arranging a Chinese New Year celebration for her community, while hosting her elderly father (James Hong) and trying to keep her adult daughter Joy’s (Stephanie Hsu) girlfriend Becky (Tallie Medel) a secret from him. Waymond has also just handed her divorce papers. In short, life is stressful for Evelyn and she is at breaking point.

Evelyn eventually snaps in the IRS building, whacking Jamie Lee Curtis’ award-winning jobsworth in the face and kicking off a chain of events that begins with a thrilling kung fu fight sequence that makes excellent use of the ever-versatile bum-bag. The entire film has an infectious gonzo energy that never lets up, with each unexpected twist and turn introducing a weird new world that could only come from the makers of Swiss Army Man (the Daniels previous film where Daniel Radcliffe played a farting, talking corpse).

With each new world comes an exciting challenge for the extremely game cast of talented actors, who get to flex every acting muscle imaginable. Yeoh skips between poised, action hero, hot mess and sexy film star to name a few and does it all in a greatly convincing and commanding manner. Hsu rocks every imaginatively designed costume change, and the way she shifts persona with a multitude of facial expressions is hugely impressive. Hsu and Yeoh’s scenes together switch effortlessly between comically violent and deeply emotional as they eventually discover connection in the strangest of places and in the most surprising forms.

For every deeply romantic or poignant moment on matters such as desire, mental health and long-term relationships, there’s a filthy, juvenile joke waiting just around the corner, and the film is suffused with such charm, wit and sincerity, that even if a particular scene doesn’t land for you, it’s not long before you’re whisked away to something deliciously silly, gasp-inducing or tear-jerking to enjoy.

This is an endlessly inventive and exquisitely crafted piece of filmmaking from a pair of audacious directors who know how to have fun while truly digging into the human condition. They’ve turned family drama, existential crisis and the mother-daughter dynamic on its head with an epic battle across universes that draws each and every one of its characters together with humour, heart and a massive dollop of empathy.

Everything Everywhere All at Once opens in cinemas on 13 May.
