Blue Beetle Review: Superheroes get their mojo back – but is it too late?

Let’s not dwell on it. Superhero movies have been on a downward trajectory for some time. Recent efforts, like Shazam: Fury Of The Gods and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, have looked tired and ragged round the edges, the fatigue spread to audiences and the result was plain to see at the box office. Take a look at the formulaic poster for DC’s Blue Beetle, and you’d think yet more of the same was on its way. You’re in for a pleasant surprise.

Teenager Jaime Reyes (Cobra Kai’s Xolo Mariduena) returns to Palmera City after graduating from college, but it’s not as he remembers it. At home, his dad’s health is failing and the family are facing eviction while, under the domination of an ambitious multi-national corporation, the city has lost its way. Then an ancient relic called the Scarab falls into his hands and chooses him as its host – whether he likes it or not. Its powers are such that it can cover him with a high-tech suit of armour, turning him into a superhero, but that company desperately needs the Scarab to develop a new law-enforcement robot. So Jaime has to protect it, using any and every means at his disposal.

Poster aside, Blue Beetle stands apart from the latest batch of superhero outings (with the obvious exception of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse) for a number of reasons. It may not have the most original of plotlines – we all know where it’s going and there are some comfortingly familiar tropes in there – but it has freshness, humour and, most noticeably of all, the sense that everybody involved is enjoying themselves rather than going through the motions. It also brings back something that both DC and Marvel lost along the way. Heart. The film has it in spades and that’s thanks to its concentration on the Reyes family, a glorious ensemble played with gusto, with Adriana Barraza outstanding as a pistol-packing granny and George Lopez going for the big laughs as the eccentric Uncle Rudy.

Just as importantly, the film knows exactly what it is and who it’s aimed at: an action-packed adventure with a colourful, warm Latino flavour made with a younger audience in mind, one that will pick up all the cultural and musical references. It may not move the genre forward in any way, but it reminds us of exactly why we loved superheroes and how their decline has left a black hole in our cinematic diet.

This could have been the film that gave them a new lease of life. But timing, as they say, is all. With DC Studios under new management, the likelihood of a sequel is open to question and coming at the end of what’s been such a dismal run for the genre, Blue Beetle may turn out to be simply a last hurrah.

Blue Beetle releases in cinemas on 18 August.

Blue Beetle, marks the first time the DC superhero has appeared on the big screen and sees recent college grad Jaime Reyes returning home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.

When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero ‘Blue Beetle’.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto (The Farm), the movie stars Xolo Maridueña, (Cobra Kai), Adriana Barraza (Thor), Damían Alcázar (Narcos), Elpidia Carrillo (Predator), Bruna Marquezine (Maldivas), Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans M.C.), with Susan Sarandon (Monarch), George Lopez (The Smurfa), Belissa Escobedo (Hocus Pocus 2), and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows).

Blue Beetle will be released in the UK on 18 August 2023 by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Suicide Squad ISEKAI Trailer: DC anime series confirmed

A DC anime series is finally happening with the official announcement of Suicide Squad ISEKAI, which will be an upcoming anime series from the collaboration of WIT Studio (Ranking of Kings, SPY x FAMILY) and Warner Bros. Japan.

ISEKAI(異世界) is the term for “another world” in Japanese, and the series will include all your favourite Suicide Squad characters, including Harley Quinn and The Joker.

The series will be directed by Eri Osada, with screenplays from Tappei Nagatsuki (Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World) and Eiji Umehara (Vivy – Fluorite Eye’s Song).

The main artwork (above) is from renowned manga artist Akira Amano (Reborn!), who is the character designer for the series, while the music will be from Kenichiro Suehiro (Fire Force).

“Japanese anime has attracted widespread popularity among global audience in these days and “ISEKAI fantasy” now is one of the most popular genres,” said Shinya Tsuruoka, animation producer Warner Bros. Japan. “What if DC characters such as Harley Quinn and The Joker rampages in ISEKAI? This is truly an outrageous anime project we deliver for a global audience from Japan.

“I am thrilled to work with WIT STUDIO for this dream project which only Warner Bros. Japan could produce. Please look forward to the original story and DC characters’ blast in ISEKAI.”

Blue Beetle: First trailer for DC’s latest superhero

Young Jaime Reyes has managed to acquire body armor that has given him supernatural powers in the upcoming feature film Blue Beetle, which marks the first time the DC superhero has appeared on the big screen.

This is the first time DC’s superhero, Blue Beelte, has appeared on the big screen.

A whole new DC Universe Movie will be heading our way this February with Legion of Super-Heroes where Supergirl ventures to the 31^st century to find answers to her present-day dilemmas, only to encounter new problems and an old enemy.

Journey to the 31st century to the Legion Academy, in Legion of Super-Heroes, where a new generation hones their powers with hopes of joining the Legion of Super-Heroes. Devastated by tragedy, Supergirl struggles to adjust to her new life on Earth. Taking her cousin Superman’s advice, Supergirl leaves their space-time to attend the Academy. There, she quickly makes new friends, as well as a new enemy with old ties: Brainiac 5. But a nefarious plot lurks in the shadows – the mysterious group known as the Dark Circle seeks a powerful weapon held in the Academy’s vault.

Directed by Jeff Wamester (Justice Society: World War II) from a screenplay by Josie Campbell (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power), the movie stars Meg Donnelly (American Housewife) as Supergirl/Kara and Harry Shum Jr. (Crazy Rich Asians) as Brainiac 5, with Darren Criss (Glee), Matt Bomer (Doom Patrol) and Jensen Ackles (The Boys) reprising their roles in this ongoing Justice League continuity as Superman, The Flash and Batman, respectively.

The film also features the voice talents of Cynthia Hamidi (FBI) as Dawnstar, Gideon Adlon (Blockers) as Phantom Girl, Ely Henry (Players) as Bouncing Boy, Robbie Daymond (Critical Role) as Timber Wolf & Brainiac 4, Yuri Lowenthal (He-Man and the Masters of the Universe) as Mon-El, Eric Lopez (Young Justice) as Cosmic Boy & Chemical King, Darin De Paul (Mortal Kombat Legends franchise) as Brainiac & Solomon Grundy, Ben Diskin (Muppet Babies) as Arms Fall Off Boy & Brainiac 2, Victoria Grace (Pacific Rim: The Black) as Shadow Lass, Jennifer Hale (Mass Effect franchise) as Alura, Daisy Lightfoot (Avengers Assemble) as Triplicate Girl, and Zeno Robinson (Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons) as Invisible Kid & Brainiac 3.
