Elly Conway is the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.

Accompanied by Aiden, a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.

Alfie is played by Chip, the real-life cat of supermodel Claudia Vaughn (née Schiffer).

Rogue One’s Gareth Edwards is back with The Creator, a completely original sci-fi movie that he has co-written and directed, which delves into the complicated issue of AI.

Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, The Creator follows Joshua (John David Washington ), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan), who is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child, Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles).

We sat down with Edwards to discuss his love of genre and whether we’ll be seeing a sequel to The Creator…

You’ve done a few genre movies now – what is it about sci-fi that inspires you to create movies in this space?

I don’t know. It’s more like I want to ask everyone else ‘why don’t you want to make science fiction films?’ It seems like the ultimate genre

A story is basically a lie – you’re making stuff up. If you’re going to make stuff up, go all the way and then crank it up to 11 and that’s what science fiction is!

I think when you do that you can you can point things out that are harder to do in a normal movie.

For instance, we go through our whole lives with certain beliefs, and we never really get tested on them because everything stays the same. But in a science fiction film, you can take some aspect of life and flip it on its head and suddenly it makes what you used to think, quite difficult. And technology does that as it turns up. Like when mp3 arrived, we started to struggle with ‘what’s the concept of ownership?’ How do you own something if it’s digital? And there’s all these philosophical thoughts that normally you never have to worry about. In science fiction, I think it’s not predicting the future, it’s supposed to prevent it. It’s supposed to flag; ‘here’s a problem with what you’re thinking or the way we’re going and heading’. It’s just supposed to trip you up a bit and make you think.

The Creator is an epic and original sci-fi movie set in the future where AI technology is prevalent (and considered dangerous).

Like all good sci-fi, The Creator deals with some very important issues – what do you think it is about genre that makes it a good platform to delve into some deep topics?

If you look at Star Wars say, it came along in an era (I mean, I’m not speaking for everybody), but for me and my friends, growing up in school, [we were] probably not going to church like the previous generation.

So we’re missing this quite primal desire for mythological stories and spiritual ideas about life and this thing with robots and spaceships comes along and we all flock to it because it looks cool. But then at the heart of it is this very spiritual storytelling that was missing from a whole generation.

You can get things under the radar with science fiction. My favourite TV show is The Twilight Zone. [The show’s creator] Rod Serling used to do drama – he won Emmys for amazing dramas but he got censored a lot by American corporations – they wouldn’t let him write certain scripts or do certain things. So he ended up creating a science fiction show called The Twilight Zone and no one censored him at all! He could talk about racism and bigotry and everything else, but wrap it up in a story about robots and no one noticed. But you still take the lesson. You still can’t help it. You put it in your pocket and you keep it for the rest of your life. Even though it wasn’t about literally what it was about, it still has the same impact. It’s sort of hidden.

The Creator delves into some pretty hefty issues like life, death and grief.

What are you looking forward to audiences seeing in The Creator?

I don’t mind how they feel or what they think about it as long as they have a reaction, I guess. There was a very sweet thing I was sent last night that really made me go ‘oh, that’s why you do it’. Someone on Facebook had recreated the whole trailer with their family in Southeast Asia and it was this little kid dressed as Alphie. They did it shot-for-shot perfect with the music and everything.

I remember doing that; trying to copy Raiders of the Lost Ark or something and it kind of made [me] go ‘oh my god, that’s the cycle’. The most amazing thing you can do is you can hand the baton to people and then they go and do something even better. That’s what life is about, isn’t it?

Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) is the AI’s world-destroying weapon.

Are you tempted to create any more stories set in the world of The Creator?

I really love the world. It’s frustrating that I couldn’t do so many of the things I wanted to do, but I’m not planning a sequel. Me and my girlfriend argue all the time because when we get a spare moment we’re like ‘what we’re going to watch on TV?’ She always wants to binge-watch some streaming show and I want to watch a film. At some point, she was like, why don’t you like TV? And I thought about it and my favourite part of the story is the end and TV never ends. I really like films because it’s like a joke where the best part is the punch line, and so this was designed to have an ending and kind of reverse-engineered from that.

So it’s a standalone thing and it’d be a high-class problem for the studio to tap you on the shoulder and say ‘we need a sequel’. That would be a difficult thing to deal with. But yeah, I’d happily take that problem.

John Kramer (Tobin Bell) is back for another set of twisted games in Saw X, which is set between the events of Saw I and II.

The movie finds a sick and desperate John travelling to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, John returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way through a series of ingenious and terrifying traps.

Producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules have been with Saw from the very beginning, ever since they watched the short movie by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, which has spawned a franchise lasting 20 years. We sat down with them to find out how they feel about more Saw, remembering where it all began, whether there will be another and discovering a very important birthday was coming up [note: this interview took place on 21 September].

So you’ve been with Saw since the very beginning…

Oren Koules: Actually, 22 September was the first day of principal photography for Saw I. So it will be 20 years tomorrow!

Wow. Happy birthday for tomorrow. Are you going to have a cake…?

Mark Burg: This is a new world we’ll probably just go for a walk and have a smoothie!

What’s it been like being on this Saw journey for all those years?

Mark Burg: It’s been a giant, fun roller coaster! There are about six or seven people who have been with this franchise since day one. We’re all still really good friends. So it’s a way of spending a couple of months every year with good friends on location somewhere. Oren, myself, Dan Hefner, our producing partner, Jason Constantine from Lionsgate, Kevin Grider, who’s edited or directed every movie, and Charlie Clauser has been doing the music since Saw I. So it’s actually like one long, extended family.

What stood out to you about the short film the first movie is based on?

Mark Burg: It was fucking amazing!

Oren Koules: I literally ran to Marks’s office. Believe it or not, it was actually a VHS. Our third partner who’s unfortunately passed away, brought it into our office. I watched it and literally ran into Mark’s office. He was talking and I’m like ‘hang up the phone, hang up the phone!’ And we watched it and we were like ‘holy cow’.

I said ‘here’s the best news. There’s actually a script that comes with it’. So we all went home, read the script. We were like, please be good, please be good, please be good. And the script was exactly what it is.

We did some rewrites. James did rewrites basically to the location, and that’s it. Mark and I decided to finance the films ourselves. We used money out of our accounts, and just hoped to get our money back and it worked!

Watch the original short film below…

[embedded content]

What do you think it is about the Saw movies that keep us coming back for more?

Mark Burg: We’ve been making the movies for 20 years. When the audience stops coming, we’ll stop making them. It’s kind of one long story and the audience really wanted John Kramer alive. We did a giant brand study with Lionsgate, and what came back was: More John Kramer. Go back to the look, feel, the grittiness of Saw I and why can’t you make a movie where John Kramer is still alive with Shawnee Smith? So we did.

We came up with a story with Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, the writers, that kind of takes place right after. Probably about three or four weeks after Saw I.

And we only wanted Kevin Greutert to direct it. We didn’t want to meet with any other directors. We knew that because he had edited every movie he would understand this movie better than anybody else.

What is Saw X about?

Mark Burg: This movie is more about John Kramer than it is about Jigsaw. We spend the first half hour with John learning about him and he’s a man that just isn’t ready to accept death. I mean, if you think about it, I don’t think anybody really is. If he could do something to live an extra day… And that’s what he does. He finds an experimental treatment in Mexico. American doctors have said it’s over, and he’s gonna say, ‘well, I’m gonna take one last shot’. And that’s where the story takes off.

What are you looking forward to audiences seeing in Saw X?

Oren Koules: We honestly think it’s the best movie we’ve made. It’s the most complete movie. It’s 25-30 minutes longer than our longest movie. It’s John Kramer from the opening shot through the middle and in the end, it’s his movie, and I think people who’ve been with us for this ride for 20 years will really appreciate it. It’s really for the fans.

We listened to what people have talked to us about over the years. We read a lot. We don’t test our movies. So we basically read all the comments and after a while we learned what people like and don’t like. We tried to make this for the fans.

Mark Burg: I think fans that maybe have stopped coming to Saw movies will hear about this movie, will see this movie and will be reinvigorated and be like alright, ‘I’m back. We think it’s that good!’

Do you think there will be more Saw movies after Saw X?

Mark Burg: Oren and myself have always been very superstitious. We never think about the next movie until the current movie opens. So you can reach out to us the Monday after the movie opens on 2 October. If the movie works, then yeah, we’ll be like ‘alright, let’s do one more’.

Saw X will be in cinemas on 29 September.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes follows a young Coriolanus (Tom Blyth) who is the last hope for his failing lineage, the once-proud Snow family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol.
In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.

From Hayao Miyazaki, the man behind classic Studio Ghibli films such as Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke comes a brand new dark fantasy for the studio with The Boy And The Heron.

Watch the trailer now…

[embedded content]

The movie follows a young boy named Mahito who is yearning for his mother and ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning.

Hayao Miyazaki’s first feature film in 10 years, The Boy and the Heron is a hand-drawn, original story written and directed by the Academy Award-winning director. Produced by Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, the film features a musical score from Miyazaki’s long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The theme song for the film ‘Spinning Globe‘ was penned and performed by global J-pop superstar Kenshi Yonezu.

The movie has been described by Studio Ghibli as a ‘semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death, and creation, in tribute to friendship’ and though it was supposed to be Hayao Miyazaki’s last movie, recent reports seem to suggest that may not be the case after all.

During the Toronto International Film Festival (where the movie has its international premier), Studio Ghibli executive Junichi Nishioka told CBC’s Eli Glasner that Miyazaki is currently working on something new

“Other people say that this might be his last film, but he doesn’t feel that way at all,” said Nishioka through a translator. “He is currently working on ideas for a new film. He comes into his office every day and does that.

“This time, he’s not going to announce his retirement at all. He’s continuing working just as he has always done.”

The Boy And The Heron is written and directed by Miyazaki and stars Soma Santoki (Idaten: Tokyo Olympics Story), Masaki Suda (Misuteri to iunakare) and Takuya Kimura (The Swam).

We’re heading back to Panem this winter — 64 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as tribute, and decades before Coriolanus Snow became a tyrannical President in upcoming prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

The movie follows a young Coriolanus (Tom Blyth) who is the last hope for his failing lineage, the once-proud Snow family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With his livelihood threatened, Snow is reluctantly assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute from the impoverished District 12. But after Lucy Gray’s charm captivates the audience of Panem, Snow sees an opportunity to shift their fates. With everything he has worked for hanging in the balance, Snow unites with Lucy Gray to turn the odds in their favour. Battling his instincts for both good and evil, Snow sets out on a race against time to survive and reveal if he will ultimately become a songbird or a snake.

A decade on from the release of James Wan’s terrifying The Conjuring comes a sequel to The Nun spinoff which marks the ninth film in this particular horror universe that also includes the Annabelle films.

Directed by Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona) the film is light on jump scares, big on gothic atmosphere and unfortunately lacking in a satisfying narrative. For the most part, it’s a plodding horror-by-numbers that leads to a fantastic finale with some decent frights but it takes far too long to get there and everything is heavily signposted along the way.

The film begins in 1956 in France when a priest inexplicably sets on fire in front of an altar boy. Meanwhile, across the country, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga reprising her role) is hiding away in a convent following the events of the first film. When she takes Novice, Debra (Storm Reid) under her wing they spark up a friendship with the young nun following Irene when her expertise is called upon to investigate the reappearance of the demon nun Valak.

The rest of the film takes place in an all-girls boarding school where an Irish teacher (Anna Popplewell) and her daughter (who is being bullied by the local girls) are finding their place. There’s also a romantic thread to the long-winded and frankly tedious storyline that starts off an interesting note about mother-daughter relationships, racism, grief and faith but fails to tackle its themes in any compelling ways.

Reid’s character is underdeveloped, with her initial backstory completely forgotten by the end of the film. Farmiga is as ever on form with a sensitive turn and her deeply emotive facial expressions delivering the goods. There’s at least some attempt to conclude her mother-daughter afflictions even if it’s handled poorly. This entry into The Conjuring Universe isn’t even bad enough to be amusing and deserves to be thrown on a funeral pyre for its sins.

The Nun II will be in cinemas on 8 September 2023.
