Half-Life Franchise Available for Free on Steam

New information suggests that Valve could release free versions of the Half-Life franchise ahead of the release of Half-Life: Alyx

As PC Gamer notes, some Steam users recently received a notification related to Half-Life Alyx that noted that the Half-Life Collection will be free leading up to the launch of the upcoming VR title. Users tried to follow a link to the aforementioned collection, but that link just sends you to an error page.

There are a couple of things worth noting about that notification. The first is that the Half-Life Collection doesn’t exist on Steam. There are Half-Life bundles available, but no bundle that sports that exact name is presently available for download. While that name could have been sent in error, that wording certainly does feel like a fairly deliberate choice.

Of course, the bigger story here is the idea that Valve will offer free versions of the Half-Life games in celebration of the release of Half-Life: Alyx. While we strongly suspect that there are many Steam owners who own Half-Life and Half-Life 2 by this point, there’s no denying that it would be pretty cool to give everyone who doesn’t own the games a chance to experience this legendary franchise. It would also be a fantastic excuse for everyone to check out that incredible Half-Life fan remake mod.

Valve has yet to confirm that they actually intend to release free versions of the Half-Life games, but considering that the Half-Life franchise has been dormant for quite some time and that the games regularly go on sale for about a dollar during Steam discount events, it certainly makes a lot of sense that they would consider just giving them away for a limited period of time.

Granted, it’s not like we needed another reason to be excited about the long-awaited return of one of PC gaming’s most important franchises
