Although its future was often in doubt season to season, Agents of SHIELD season 7 was a sure thing right from the start as ABC renewed the series for two shortened seasons shortly after the end of season five. With the introduction of another time travel storyline — this time to past — the fact that season 7 will be the show’s final run introduces interesting possibilities for coming full circle with the origins of the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization.

With season having arrived as a summer series in mid-2019, the earliest we are likely to see the Agents of SHIELD season 7 premiere will be in early to mid 2020.

Agents of SHIELD Season 7 Cast
There were some close calls and even more than one outright death in seasons five and six, but that didn’t stop Agents of SHIELD season 7 from bringing back all of the regular cast inclduing — you guessed it — Clark Gregg as a version of Phil Coulson, Chloe Bennet as Daisy, Ming-Na Wen as May, Henry Simmons as Mack, Iain de Caestecker as Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Yoyo, and Jeff Ward as Deke.
Although the fate of some characters was left up in the air in the season six finale, we did get confirmation from the showrunners in a post-mortem interview that Flint, played by Coy Stewart, would be returning for Agents of SHIELD season 7. There was also indications on Ming-Na Wen’s social media that Briana Venskus as Agent Piper would be alive and well in the final season.
In fact, Wen may have inadvertently revealed on her Instagram account that Agent Carter‘s Enver Gjokaj would be a part of Agents of SHIELD season 7, indicating there might be a crossover of sorts for the canceled spinoff. More on that below…
Agents of SHIELD Season 7 Story
Executive producers Jeph Loeb and Jeff Bell spoke to us at San Diego Comic-Con about how Agents of SHIELD would end in a broad sense, but in our ending explainer article, we also speculated on where the show might be headed now that the team appears to have traveled back in time to 1931 using an upgraded Remorath jump drive courtesy of Enoch.
Although many fans are itching for an Agent Carter crossover, the time period season six ends in would find Peggy at only ten years of age, but we’re not ruling out the possibility that the Zephyr One might make additional trips through history. With the Chronicoms seeking to take over Earth to reestablish their race on a new home planet of Chronica-3, the history of S.H.I.E.L.D. appears to be an important part of how the AI race intends to eradicate any threats to its takeover and of how our team will be able to defeat the would-be invaders.
As for what the cast has to say about it, Chloe Bennet confirmed to Digital Spy that season 7 would involve time travel. “I can say we are back in time, so we have to get… back to where we were,” says Bennet. “So that means travelling through a bunch of different time periods and who knows who we see on the way back, if we even get back… Season 4 and season 7 are definitely my favourite seasons of SHIELD.”
The big bombshell, of course, was that Agents of SHIELD season 7 would see a return of the seemingly unkillable Phil Coulson. Clark Gregg spent all of season six as a completely different character, and although the new LMD that Enoch and Fitz-Simmons created is not exactly the former director we know and love, this version will be much closer to the real thing than Sarge was.
