The much-hyped Minecraft Super Duper Graphics update is now officially dead.
“Some of you might remember us announcing the Super Duper Graphics Pack during E3 2017. Super Duper was an ambitious initiative that brought a new look to Minecraft,” reads a post on the Minecraft blog. “Unfortunately, the pack proved too technically demanding to implement as planned. We realize this is disappointing to some of you – there was a lot of enthusiasm for Super Duper from inside and outside the studio – but unfortunately, we aren’t happy with how the pack performed across devices. For this reason, we’re stopping development on the pack, and looking into other ways for you to experience Minecraft with a new look.”
The Super Duper Graphics update was revealed in 2017. The update promised to bring high-end visuals to Minecraft that included modern effects like dynamic shadows and edge highlighting. It was essentially going to make Minecraft look much closer to a triple-A game.
Fans started to fear for the future of the update when Minecraft developer Mojang delayed the updates release date from 2017 to 2018 and then failed to share any substantial new information regarding it for over a year. It was basically considered to be dead at that point.

What’s interesting about the official announcement regarding that the cancellation of the Super Duper update is the line in which Mojang states that they weren’t “happy with how the pack performed across devices.” That would tend to suggest that either the update was too ambitious for multiple current-gen devices or that lower-end devices like mobile platforms and even the Nintendo Switch would have had to have been excluded from the update entirely.
In any case, Minecraft remains an absurdly popular title that’s really become the flagship for Microsoft’s ambitious plan to invade other devices and consoles rather than limit themselves to the Xbox brand.
