The relationship between The Expanse‘s Amos and Naomi is one of the most compelling on the show. We met the two as best friends and found family members in Season 1, and saw their relationship perhaps irrevocably broken when Naomi gave Fred Johnson and the Belters the protomolecule at the end of Season 2.
“She’s not the person I thought she was,” Amos tells Alex concerning Naomi in the Season 3 premiere—quite the telling statement from a person who, previously, would have followed Naomi anywhere, often using her judgment as his own moral compass in Seasons 1 and 2.
Naomi spends much of her time in Season 3 away from Amos, Holden, and Alex, working with the OPA as the Belter government uses humanity’s precarious investigation of The Ring as part of an ongoing effort to be recognized as equal to “the inners.” Eventually, Naomi chooses her Roci crew member identity above her Belter identity, returning to the Rocinante when they are in danger. ”I guess it took being away to understand that you’re my family,” Naomi tells Amos after she saves his life.

While Naomi and Amos relationship was partially repaired by the end of Season 3, their relationship is far less solid than when we initially met these two characters. Den of Geek had the chance to ask Dominique Tipper (Naomi) and Wes Chatham (Amos) about what we can expect from Naomi and Amos in Season 4, when it premieres on Amazon in December.
“I’m not sure they will ever be how they were because of the break of trust,” said Tipper, “and that also switches something in Amos’ psyche. But, they do go through some quite… I don’t know how to explain it… Difficult, but then quite lovely [experiences] as the way it affects them and just what you see in the little nods to their relationship from before.”
Season 4 will see Naomi, Amos, Holden, and Alex traveling through the Ring Gate on a mission from the U.N. to explore new worlds. As we saw in the footage that premiered at San Diego Comic Con, Ilus will be the first planet the Roci crew touches down upon and, as the season’s official synopsis teases, “while Earthers, Martians and Belters maneuver to colonize Ilus and its natural resources, these early explorers don’t understand this new world and are unaware of the larger dangers that await them.”

“There are challenges and struggles that we face that are greater than any internal squabbles that we’ve had,” teased Chatham concerning Naomi and Amos’ relationship in the context of Season 4, “and it really forces us to bind together the family and, in a way, whenever something like that happens, when you reconcile and come together you’re actually closer and stronger than you were before.”
Speaking more generally about Amos’ character, who is a fan favorite, Cas Anvar (Alex) said: “It’s kind of hard to keep Amos static because he has such a huge evolution compared to the rest of the us. His emotional journey is massive because he’s going from this very, very broken person that’s healing. You never really go back to that state. He’s got the most distance to travel of all of us.”
The Expanse Season 4 will return on December 13th on Amazon. The show has already been greenlit for a fifth season.
