Animal Crossing: New Horizons project lead Aya Kyogoku has confirmed via an interview with Mashable that series staple Mr. Resetti has been fired from his traditional Animal Crossing role and will be assigned new duties in New Horizons.
For those who don’t know, Mr. Resetti first appeared in the original Animal Crossing for GameCube. Since then, his main job has been to lecture players who reset the game without saving first. Players who fail to save before resetting multiple times would receive increasingly longer speeches from Resetti that could not be skipped until they were completed. Some of those lectures would even require players to repeat certain phrases.
So why won’t Resetti retain his position in New Horizons? Well, it seems that evolving technology has rendered his job irrelevant.
“I think this will be a positive thing for the player, because in New Horizons you can stop playing in the middle of your game and it’ll still save,” says Kyogoku. “But unfortunately, because there’s no necessity to reset the game or reset button on the Switch, Mr. Resetti had a hard time. He was laid off from his position.”

Kyogoku suggests that Resetti is currently looking for a new job, but he doesn’t offer any information on what that new job may be. We suppose he could always go work for Tom Nook; the other most annoying (but necessary) character in the Animal Crossing series.
Many have already pointed out the fascinating commentary on Resetti losing his job due to automation and the implications this has on the social structure of the Animal Crossing universe. In any case, we’ll miss Resetti’s unique (if frustrating) role in the franchise.
