Stranger Things is set to become the latest brand to line up a location-based mobile game, following a trend that kicked off when Pokémon Go took the world by storm in 2016. It’s been confirmed that the new Stranger Things mobile game is set to launch in 2020.
This isn’t the first Stranger Things mobile game, of course, since an 8-bit-aping Stranger Things game launched alongside the show’s second season in 2017. But it is still significant that Netflix is looking to enter the location-based gaming arena, since Pokémon Go proved that this type of game has the potential to earn millions of dollars of revenue year on year.
As for the specifics, it was revealed at E3 that the new Stranger Things mobile game will blend RPG and puzzle-solving mechanics, as well as location-based technology, to enable players to navigate The Upside-Down using their mobile devices. The title will not shy away from the retro feel of the show, either, so expect to see some charmingly antiquated graphics.
Chris Lee, who heads up interactive gaming for the hugely popular streaming service, told attendees at E3 that Netflix’s gaming wing “has been busy in the last year making new friends. We have a number of new projects coming out.”

The new Stranger Things mobile game will launch in 2020, and it will be sure to garner a fair bit of buzz. Before that, a Nintendo Switch title called Stranger Things 3: The Game will launch on 4 July 2019 to compliment Netflix’s release of Stranger Things season 3. It has also been strongly suggested that we’ll be seeing some Stranger Things/Fortnite crossover content in the coming weeks.
We’ll keep you posted as we hear more about all of these projects. Meanwhile, David Harbour told us what to expect from Stranger Things Season 3.
