The Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee has posted new ratings which strongly suggest that Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, and a retro Konami collection are coming to PC.
The ratings, which were posted by Gematsu, are surprisingly informative. Not only has the committee been a pretty reliable source of information in the past, but these particular ratings even include images of the rumored titles. Nothing is a guarantee until we get confirmation from Konami and other interested parties, but it really looks like some classic Metal Gear games (as well as a Konami collection that includes Castlevania, Castlevania 2, Castlevania 3, Contra, and Super C) are coming to PC.
Of course, some fans will recall that Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2 did previously appear on PC. While many are already suspecting that these upcoming rumored releases will actually just be re-releases of those old PC ports, the fact that those games have not been commercially available for PC for quite some time would still even make a half-hearted (aka, the “Konami Special”) PC ports more welcome than they would usually be.
On that note, some of the details of this report are strange. It makes sense that Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2 would be ported to PC, but it’s somewhat odd that the original Metal Gear would be brought to PC as a standalone title. For that matter, the rumored Konami collection is also a bit strange considering that separate Castlevania and Contra collections are currently available on PC. Granted, a similar collection was previously released on PC years ago, but it just feels significantly less valuable these days. It seems like there may be some details of these upcoming releases that aren’t quite clear yet based on what we know courtesy of this leak.
Maybe we’re just hoping that Konami will somehow shed their recent reputation as the lazy purveyors of low effort nostalgia-based cash grabs and at least try to deliver something a bit more substantial. That feels highly unlikely given the “everything” about Konami and the fact that 2020 is a vacuum which good news cannot survive in, but hey, if these ports sell well, then it’s always possible that Konami could release a rushed PC port of Metal Gear Solid 3 five years down the line. We can only assume that’s the legacy that creator Hideo Kojima would want for this franchise.
