I’m not wishing the year away (well… actually… this could be the only year it would be okay to wish away) but September doesn’t just mean the end of summer, it means the beginning of Autumn and that’s always a good thing for genre goodness!
But if I go back a couple of weeks first, I have to mention what a great job the organisers of FrightFest and Fantasia festivals did this year, bringing us an amazing array of wonderful new films digitally. We missed our fellow genre fans but their hard work ensured we didn’t miss out on some brilliant up and coming movies – don’t forget to check out our reviews and interviews from the two festivals.
While I’m thanking people… I have to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in our Superman: Man Of Tomorrow Twitter Watchalong party back in late August. It was a great night full of geeking out about the Man Of Steel and we were even joined by the film’s screenwriter Tim Sheridan who gave us some invaluable insight into DC’s new animation. If you missed out, you can see some of the questions we asked Tim here or you can go into the deep, dark vaults of Twitter using the hashtags #SupermanMOT and #TomorrowParty to see what went down. Superman: Man Of Tomorrow has just been released on Blu-ray this week so treat yourself and buy it now (you know you deserve it!).
This month looks to be just as exciting, with Mulan starting things off on the right foot! Due to be shown on the big screen back in March, the live action version of the classic 1998 Disney animation is now available on Disney+. We spoke to director Niki Caro back before the world went mad about her vision of the film.
Looking ahead, I can’t wait to party on with the third installment of the excellent adventures and bogus journeys of Bill and Ted in Bill And Ted Face The Music which will be out simultaneously at the cinema and on demand in the UK on 16 September! That’s not the only chance to visit the cinema this month (if you’re feeling comfortable to do so), with Christopher Nolan’s latest mind-bender Tenet and the latest addition to the X-men series, The New Mutants both out to see on the big screen – we spoke to director Josh Boone and the cast all about the highly-anticipated latter film.
September is also a good month for TV with Amazon Prime releasing Season Two of the brilliant The Boys – Season One was one of our favourite shows last year (and it was a packed year of great genre shows in 2019) so we can’t wait to see what those foul-mouth supe-hating tearaways have in store for us. Netflix is also giving us a few treats this month with Ryan Murphy’s Ratched out on 18 September (based on the character of Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest no less!) and we can join the kids of Camp Cretaceous in the dino animated series Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous out on the same day. There is also creepy Lovecraftian horror Lovecraft Country showing over on Sky – if you haven’t started watching it yet, make sure you get on to it!
For those spying the colder weather and wanting to curl up under a blanket with a good book, the second in the dystopian trilogy by M R Carey, The Trials Of Koli is out on 17 September. That’s not all, this month will also see the release of The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart on 10 September, The Left-Handed Booksellers Of London by Garth Nix on 24 September and To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by the brilliant author of Eragon Christopher Paolini on 15 September. Expect to see our reviews of those in the coming weeks!
Bringing things closer to home, if you haven’t seen it already we have launched our very own newsletter, meaning you can get a weekly injection of all things genre straight to your inbox. It includes interviews, reviews and competitions so make sure you subscribe now.
As ever, don’t forget to get in contact with us on Twitter or Facebook with what you’re looking forward to this month and don’t forget to stay excellent to each other!
