As perfectly exampled by our recent Massive Marvel Takeover in Issue 6 of SFN+, the new phase of the MCU is well and truly underway. Especially with the upcoming arrival of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, which follows Sam Wilson aka The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and perhaps even see the former take up the famous Captain America shield…
As exciting as this new phase for Marvel is, it’s important to understand its incredible legacy and that includes Captain Amerca himself, who was originally created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon and has now reached the ripe old age of 80. Just like the man himself, the comic book is ageing rather gracefully and is as popular as it ever was, and this new comic-book chronicle from The Folio Society perfectly demonstrates why.

For this new edition, former Marvel editor-in-chief Roy Thomas has selected and introduces key stories from Cap’s career – from wartime battles with the Red Skull to his Reagan-era resignation. Award-winning Marvel illustrator Michael Cho also provides inspiring cover art of Cap himself in glorious red, white and blue, as well as a sapphire slipcase design stamped with the iconic shield emblem.
Not only that, but this edition features a replica issue of 1941’s Captain America Comics #1, whose cover famously depicts our hero punching out Hitler months before America fully entered World War II. This iconic piece of comic book history has been reproduced in its entirety for this new edition, with every page being painstakingly scanned from an authentic copy. The size and page quality perfectly mimics the original, meaning you can’t help but delicately unsheath the book from its slipcase when you open it, and… ahem… marvel at the beginning of a character that readers will love for the next eight decades.
Bound in blocked cloth and paper printed with a design by Michael Cho, The Folio Society’s new celebratory edition includes 288 pages printed in four-colour throughout. You really are immersed in the hero’s history with this new edition, right down to the yellowing of the original comic pages. Just take a look at our gallery from the book below…
The ten milestone tales collected within the hardback book itself have been carefully curated by Stan Lee’s editorial successor Roy Thomas. They showcase the galaxy of comic book talent – from writers Lee and Ed Brubaker to artists Frank Miller and Gene Colan – who chronicled Cap’s adventures throughout the modern era. This collection also includes the fan-favourite 1976 story ‘Screamer in the Brain!’, written and drawn by Jack Kirby himself following his return to Marvel.
So before you ready yourself for a whole new hero to take up the iconic shield, take a trip back to 1941 to see where it all began…
