When elderly mother Edna (Robyn Nevin), inexplicably vanishes, her daughter Kay (Emily Mortimer) and granddaughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) rush to their family’s decaying country home, finding clues of her increasing dementia scattered around the house in her absence.
After Edna returns just as mysteriously as she disappeared, Kay’s concern that her mother seems unwilling or unable to say where she’s been clashes with Sam’s unabashed enthusiasm to have her grandma back. As Edna’s behaviour turns increasingly volatile, both begin to sense that an insidious presence in the house might be taking control of her…
Relic is classic haunted house horror mixed with the very real horror of losing someone you love to a mental illness: “I do really like how horror allows you to talk about fear in a really interesting way,” director Natalie Erika James told us when we spoke to her about the film. “Fear is such a primal emotion, and I think that the ability to externalise my fear and play with that visually and often in a surreal way is just really appealing in a genre framework.
“I also quite like how genre has all these conventions that you can subvert or embrace as it suits your themes or your needs. That’s really fun, and you can provide this really thrilling narrative engine to talk about something really important.”
Starring Emily Mortimer (Mary Poppins the Returns), Robyn Nevin (The Matrix), and Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows) Relic will be out on Digital HD on 8 January and Blu-ray and DVD on 18 January 2021 and we have three copies to give away!
