A leaked Doritos promotion appears to offer even more evidence that Call of Duty 2020 will be called Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
The promotion was seemingly spotted by TheGamingRevolution and shared via various outlets. It showcases an upcoming Doritos promotion campaign for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War which allows players to enter codes found on select Doritos packages for a chance to win double XP in Cold War for a year.
Interestingly, it seems that the promotion is set to start on October 5, 2020, and end on January 31, 2021. That would seem to suggest that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be released sometime in early October or perhaps even before that.
This is hardly the first time that we’ve heard rumors that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will serve as the 2020 installment into the Call of Duty franchise. In fact, that information has been gaming’s biggest open secret for quite some time.
Some time ago, we heard rumors that the next Call of Duty will focus on the Vietnam War in some way. While it remains to be seen how much of this upcoming game will actually focus on the Vietnam War, subsequent reports suggested that Call of Duty 2020 will indeed be more about the general events of the Cold War. Even Call of Duty‘s Warzone mode seemed to hint at that setting and a few narrative possibilities.
Outside of this rumored Doritos promotion, though, the most compelling evidence that Call of Duty 2020 will focus on the Cold War comes from a mysterious Microsoft Store listing known as The Red Door. Not only does circumstantial evidence surrounding that listing strongly hint that it’s related to Call of Duty 2020, but some simple data-mining all but confirms that it’s an alpha placeholder for the upcoming game.
While it’s true that the details of this rumored promotion haven’t been confirmed as of yet, we’d be stunned to learn that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War isn’t the next Call of Duty game. What remains to be seen is whether or not Cold War will focus more on the campaign mode than some recent Call of Duty titles have and whether it will revive the Blackout battle royale mode featured in Black Ops 4 or if it will instead introduce a new variation of the battle royale concept.
