Ghostwire: Tokyo is the new first-person horror game from Tango Gameworks, the studio led by Resident Evil veteran Shinji Mikami which previously created The Evil Within series. At E3 2019, Mikami described the stylish and eerie Ghostwire: Tokyo, which takes place in the aftermath of a Rapture-like event, as an action-adventure game in which you will fight paranormal enemies and rid the city of “a supernatural evil.”
Ikumi Nakamura, former creative director at Tango Gameworks, explained that players will “encounter conspiracies and the occult. You have to explore the world, face challenges.”
“We are making a new kind of action-adventure game,” Nakamura said. “It’s spooky! But not the usual kind of survival horror game Tango is known for.”
While an announcement trailer teased the aesthetic of the game, we don’t know very much about the actual story of the title except that something is really awry with reality. According to Bethesda, at the start of the game, “Tokyo is overrun by deadly supernatural forces after 99% of the city’s population vanished.”
These supernatural forces are made up of evil spirits (known as the Visitors) that you must vanquish to save the city, according to the PlayStation blog, which outlined the types of enemies you will face in the game. The types of evil spirits include the Amewarashi, which “manifests as a young child in a yellow raincoat. Derived from the powerful emotions of sadness caused by being separated from his parents, as well as his innocent yet mischievous spirit, this Visitor will call for help and bring forth fellow spirit when it feels threatened.” There’s also the Shiromuku, “a traditional type of pure white wedding kimono, and though she may appear to be a bride, this Visitor is actually a physical manifestation of powerful emotions.” And the Kuchisake, “a strong and agile opponent, capable of closing distances quickly to get at you with her large scissor blades. Be careful if she asks you if you find her attractive; there are no right answers there.”
That sounds like a bit of a departure from The Evil Within, doesn’t it? Not only will this game feature a bit more action but it sounds like it will employ a slightly more subtle approach to horror.
The game is console exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and will utilize the PS5’s 3D audio system. “We’re particularly excited by the possibility of players experiencing our modern, yet Visitor-filled city with 3D sound,” said Kenji Kimura, Game Director on Ghostwire: Tokyo. “This version of Tokyo is not a version you’ve ever seen or heard before. In Ghostwire: Tokyo, you’ll hear and encounter sounds that you normally would not hear in the city in real life. Our hope is that with the 3D sound, you will feel compelled to seek out and identify what is causing those sounds you hear.”
