Love, Simon was one of the sweetest surprises of 2018. The Greg Berlanti-directed adaptation of Becky Albertalli’s Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, did well both critically and commercially and has led to a further expansion of the on-screen world.
Last year, Hulu announced they would be making a TV show sequel for Disney+. In February, it was announced it would actually premiere on Hulu, which is also under the Disney corporate umbrella. Now, with its June launch just around the corner, we have the official trailer…
As you can see from the trailer above, Love, Victor will follow a different main protagonist who goes to the same school Simon attended. Victor, played by Michael Cimino, will reach out to Simon for advice on how to navigate exploring his sexual identity in high school, but it seems like the story will mostly be separate from the one we saw in Love, Simon. Tonally, however, the series seems to maintain the same optimistic and earnest vibes of the film.
In addition to Cimino, Love, Victor also stars Ana Ortiz, James Martinez, Isabella Ferreira, Mateo Fernandez, Rachel Naomi Hilson, Bebe Wood, George Sear, Anthony Turpel, and Mason Gooding. Nick Robinson, who starred as Simon in the feature film, is a producer on the series, which he also narrates.
While the TV series does not boast Love, Simon director Greg Berlanti behind the camera in that same role, it does have Love, Simon screenwriters Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Aptaker and Berger created the series and wrote the first episode.
In a previous statement, Aptaker and Berger said of the opportunity: “Writing Love, Simon was one of the most profound and enjoyable experiences of our careers to date and we are beyond thrilled that we get to revisit this world and tell the story of Victor, a brand new Creekwood student, and his family and friends. We have a phenomenal group of writers with tremendously personal connections to the material crafting our episodes, and have assembled a dream team cast and crew to bring these stories to life, and cannot wait to share what we’re working on with the world.”
