Hideo Kojima has revealed that Death Stranding will have a “Very Easy” mode.
“Normally there’s only Easy Mode, but we added Very Easy Mode for movie fans since we have real actors like Norman, Mads, Lea starred in,” said Kojima via Twitter. “Even Yano-san who never completed the 1st stage of PAC-MAN, was able to complete the game on Very Easy Mode.”
The “real actors” line is a bit odd, but we’re just going to take that to mean “actors well-known outside of video games.” Regardless, it does seem that those who want to just see Death Stranding‘s story and world will be able to do so via this new mode.
What’s interesting is how easy this mode apparently is. Hideo Kojima’s assistant noted on Twitter that she was able to complete the game in about a month on Very Easy mode while doing other work. She doesn’t note how many hours she played the game in total, but the implication would seem to be that this mode is perfect for people who have relatively little free time to play the game on harder difficulties (which apparently include Normal and Hard settings). Kojima’s tweet also hints that there’s also an “Easy” mode, but that’s not confirmed and we don’t know what the difference between the two modes would be.

It’s not exactly surprising to learn that Kojima is interested in a very easy option. Love his work or hate his work, Kojima has traditionally favored a more cinematic storytelling style that is designed to resemble movies. There are no doubt some who will welcome the chance to skip some of Death Stranding‘s gameplay and just enjoy the story.
Whether or not that story will live up to some of Kojima’s finest moments in gaming (particularly horror gaming) remains to be seen.
