Patrice Désilets, who created Assassin’s Creed with Jade Raymond and Corey May at Ubisoft, has been talking about his upcoming projects in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. Perhaps most surprisingly, he wants to tell the story of the catastrophic 2010 Haiti earthquake in video game form.
Désilets founded his own company, Panache Digital Games, back in 2014. Through Panache, Désilets is due to launch a third-person survival title called Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey later this year. This interview reveals that his future plans don’t stop there.
“Panache has another IP called 1666 Amsterdam, which we will eventually make,” Désilets said. Ancestors and 1666 Amsterdam only represent the tip of Panache’s creative iceberg, though. “I have my own personal portfolio of ideas and they’re not all set in the past.”
Désilets continued: “Eventually, for sure, we will need to do a game set in the future, or a fantasy land, or set in reality… I have a game idea that’s really precise about a story that happened to my father. My father is a survivor of the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, and I want to tell that story eventually.”

This sounds like a very personal story for Désilets, especially since his own dad was present during the natural disaster. Of course, though, with the game being based on true events, Désilets and his team would have to be very careful during the development. Estimates of the death toll range from 100,000 to 160,000 for the 2010 earthquake, so certainly this isn’t an event to be taken lightly.
Closing out the interview, Désilets said this: “But we’d have to meet again for me to tell you about that.” We look forward to hearing more about the game, which could be something very powerful if the developers handle it right.
